About HLRN

HLRN is ...

In 2001 the seven North-German states Berlin, Brandenburg (joined in 2012), Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein formed the North-German Supercomputing Alliance (Norddeutscher Verbund zur Förderung des Hoch- und Höchstleistungsrechnens – HLRN), which is a component of the national HPC infrastructure. The HLRN alliance jointly operates a distributed supercomputer system hosted at Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum für Informationstechnik Berlin (ZIB) and at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

The HPC resources of HLRN are used by scientists from North-German universities and other scientific institutions of the seven states, but also beyond. They are supported by the HLRN competence network.

By agreement the HLRN supercomputer is regularly adapted to the state of the art of technology. In 2017 the HLRN states again have pooled their resources along with funds from the German Ministry of Education and Science (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung – BMBF) to procure the HLRN-IV system.

In its first phase the HLRN-IV system consists of a Cray XC30/XC40 supercomputer with Aries interconnect at the site Berlin (ZIB) and an Atos System with Omni-Path interconnect at University Göttingen. Both sites are closely integrated and are interconnected via the HLRN link, a dedicated 10 GE fiber connection for high performance data exchange. Thus the combined complexes can be operated and used as one unified system.

HLRN operates its supercomputers for the top science and research in North Germany. Projects are admitted to HLRN by the Scientific Board (Admission Committee) through a peer-review process based on scientific criteria.

HLRN maintains a transregional and interdisciplinary working competence network. The consultants advise and support users during all states of their project including preparatory work, e.g. in porting and optimizing of codes and use of the system. The competence network consists of experts in the areas of geosciences, chemistry, material sciences, engineering sciences, climate sciences, oceanography, mathematics, physics, and informatics.

Professional training and continuing education of the young scientists is particularly important for this network. Technical knowledge is imparted through consultancy and training as well as in academic education through workshops, courses, and academic classes.

For the development of algorithms and software codes the projects can draw on the continuously developing method competence in the alliance. Installations of widely used application software for various scientific disciplines are continuously updated and enhanced in an exchange between consultants and users at HLRN. For the visualisation of numerical data HLRN makes available specialized compute nodes, equipment (Power Wall, Workbench), and software.

With the periodically renewed systems HLRN accounts for the steadily increasing demand for capacities in high-performance computing and data analytics in the different scientific disciplines. This allows for successfully tackling current issues in the above mentioned areas as well as in aerodynamics and ship building as well as in the life sciences.
